Specific Heat Capacity Practical
- Place an empty beaker on a balance
- Tare the balance to zero
- Pour oil into the beaker
- Record the mass of the oil from the balance
- Using a thermometer, record the initial temperature of the oil
- Place an immersion heater into the oil
- Wrap the beaker in insulating foam
- Connect the immersion heater to a joulemeter
- Connect the immersion heater to a powerpack
- Turn on the powerpack
- Leave for 30 minutes
- Record the final temperature from the thermometer
- Record the energy transfer from the joulemeter
- Calculate the specific heat capacity using the shc equation
Thermal Insulators Practical
- Place a small beaker inside a large beaker
- Add boiling water to the small beaker
- Place a cardboard lid over the large beaker, ensure that the lid has a hole in it
- Put a thermometer in the hole of the lid
- Record the initial temperature, and then rerecord the temperature every 3 minutes for 15 minutes
- Repeat the experiment using the same volume of boiling water, this time place an insulating material in the large beaker
- Repeat the experiment many times, using different insulating materials of the same mass
